CYBER-TEEN ANGST
W ith all the unease about youngsters and the Internet—
cyberbullying, sexting, and the like— here's a bit o f good
news. New research published in the journal
Child and
Adolescent Social W ork
suggests that when adolescents are
blogging, their subjects include favorite video games and TV
shows, after-school activities, hom ework, being bored, and
not fitting in. That is, pretty much what they've always talked
about, even in the analog world. "I really thought we were
going to find problem children w riting about their antisocial
behaviors, but that wasn't the case,'' says study author Dawn
Anderson-Butcher, who looked at kids' posts on the Web site
Xanga.com.
“ We found that they were just pretty normal."
But that doesn't mean parents should sit back and relax.
Digital social networking is “ just a new way o f being a friend
and talking and sharing," says the social w orker and Ohio
State University professor. “ Adults have to learn the
technology and be part o f that— we can't ignore it." Beyond
m ore involvement w ith your child, there may even be
som ething in it foryou. “ I love texting," Anderson-Butcher
admits. “ I can text and have a babysitter in five minutes." ®
